DevOps with Kubernetes, 2nd Edition: Leverage the power of Kubernetes to build an efficient software delivery pipeline

Kubernetes has been widely adopted across public clouds and on-premise data centers. As we?re living in an era of microservices, knowing how to use and manage Kubernetes is an essential skill for everyone in the IT industry.

DevOps with Kubernetes, 2nd Edition is a guide to everything you need to know about Kubernetes from simply deploying a container to administrating Kubernetes clusters wisely. You?ll learn about DevOps fundamentals, as well as deploying a monolithic application as microservices and using Kubernetes to orchestrate them. You will then gain an insight into the Kubernetes network, extensions, authentication and authorization.

With the DevOps spirit in mind, you?ll learn how to allocate resources to your application and prepare to scale them efficiently. Knowing the status and activity of the application and clusters is crucial, so we?ll learn about monitoring and logging in Kubernetes. Having an improved ability to observe your services means that you will be able to build a continuous delivery pipeline with confidence. At the end of the book, you?ll learn how to run managed Kubernetes services on three top cloud providers: Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft Azure.

error NU1403: Package content hash validation failed for X. The package is different than the last restore.

Atlassian spurs DevOps adoption for the enterprise

Atlassian adds new features to Bitbucket and Bamboo to enhance DevOps security and reliability, as well as to simplify the build process for developers.

Software development toolmaker Atlassian is moving to empower large organizations to adopt DevOps despite challenges, such as global scale, deep-rooted silos, disconnected tools and complicated compliance requirements.

To help spur DevOps adoption in the enterprise, Atlassian has added new features in its Bitbucket Server and Data Center 5.0 and Bamboo 6.0 products. Bitbucket is a hosting service for source code and development projects that enables developers to collaborate on projects. Bamboo is a continuous integration, deployment and release tool. The company introduced the new product features at its Atlassian Summit Europe 2017 in Barcelona.

Alison Huselid, head of HipChat Server, Bamboo, FishEye and Crucible at Atlassian, said the new features help enterprises overcome the challenges of compliance and scale to encourage DevOps adoption.

For instance, the new Bamboo Specs feature in Bamboo 6.0 modernizes enterprise software development by allowing Bamboo build plans to be configured as code. This gives developers more control over the development process, removing the need to involve other teams or switch between their code and their build systems.

"Developers can now control the process of updating their build," Huselid said. "They don't need to context switch between their code and the build that's been established."

Meanwhile, the new committer verification in Bitbucket Server and Data Center 5.0 addresses compliance requirements by enforcing that only the author of a commit can push included changes back to the central repository, and it stores a log of code changes for audit purposes.

"Committer verification for Bitbucket is focused on addressing compliance requirements for enterprises," Huselid noted.

Kurt Chase, director of engineering services at San Francisco-based Splunk, which uses Atlassian's Bitbucket, said committer verification is "a feature we will certainly take advantage of, because we have to be compliant with [Amazon Web Services] GovCloud, with PCI [Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard], with HIPAA [Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act]. There's a number of security programs that we maintain compliance for, so this will help us."

Regarding the new features in Bamboo, Chase said, "It's about time that they have given us the ability to have our build jobs as code and we can commit them to the repo."

Chase said Splunk also is investigating smart mirroring, a new feature in Bitbucket Data Center 5.0 that enables global teams to maintain mirror access in the event of short outages by caching authentication credentials locally.

Though Splunk has not started using the new feature, "we need it desperately," he said, noting that Splunk runs large engineering teams all over the world, and "the ability to avoid all that latency for local engineers is absolutely huge."

Chase explained that Splunk is an Atlassian shop up and down the stack. They are heavy users of Atlassian's JIRA, Confluence, Bitbucket and Bamboo products, as well as FishEye and HipChat. Chase said one of the things the Splunk DevOps team values most is the integration between the Atlassian tools, because a developer can open a defect in JIRA, get a branch created in Bitbucket and see the build status from Bamboo.

"Adopting DevOps in the enterprise is more than just better communication across operations and development, modern continuous integration practices, or the type of version control in place," said Amber Frauenholtz, Bitbucket product marketing manager at Atlassian, in a blog post. "Things like compliance and scale become just as important. Tooling must provide freedom and structure, scalability and performance -- things that are not often found together."

Atlassian is targeting DevOps adoption in the enterprise because DevOps is still underutilized in enterprise environments. A recent study -- the "DevOps Maturity Model" report -- conducted by xMatters and Atlassian indicated that 43% of respondents in organizations of 1,000 people or more said they either didn't know of or didn't have a DevOps initiative in place.

"Though vendors often talk and their customers often think of DevOps as a naturally occurring, seamlessly integrated whole, the reality is often messier," said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT. "In part, that's because many solutions focus more on making life easier for developers than they do on ensuring that operational requirements are met. That issue impacts enterprises especially hard, since their applications often need to be more scalable and follow more rigorous compliance guidelines."

Frauenholtz said smart mirroring in Bitbucket Data Center is a hassle-free way of providing geographically dispersed teams a read-only copy of the repository. Also in Bitbucket Data Center 5.0, Atlassian introduced authentication caching -- a way for end users to maintain mirror access, even in the event of short outages, she said.

In addition, Frauenholtz said Atlassian is breaking through silos and introducing tighter integrations between Bitbucket Server, Bamboo and JIRA Software Server. JIRA is Atlassian's bug-tracking, issue-tracking and project-management software.

"Changing the way your teams work, adopting new tools, and learning new technologies is hard and doesn't happen overnight," she said. "When you add disconnected tools, complicated compliance requirements and scalability to the mix, it makes 'going DevOps' that much more difficult. No matter where you are in your DevOps journey, Atlassian provides the guidance and tools to help you succeed."

Build Versioning in Azure DevOps Pipelines

Chetan Sarma

Dec 12, 2019 В· 6 min read

Introduction:

Versioning is one of the important aspects of software build and release cycles. There are different principles around versioning your changes, but the most commonly adopted system is Semantic Versioning also called SemVer.

In short semantic versioning, is denoted by X .Y.Z where X is the major version, Y is a minor version, and Z is the patch. You can read more about the semantic versioning here https://semver.org

Azure DevOps is a CI/CD platform by Microsoft. It is a pretty neat platform with a lot of out of box tools to automate your CI/CD pipelines.

The sc o pe of this article is restricted to application builds and versioning using Azure Pipelines YAML file. We will cover this article in two iterations. The first will be versioning PR and feature branch builds, and the second will be versioning a master branch. The idea is to version the master branch differently than PR and feature branch builds.

Before we dig into the main topic, some introduction to Azure DevOps pipelines.

By default, Azure DevOps will version your build with YYYYMMDD.Revision format.

For example, if we build the below azure-pipelines.yml file, the first build number will be 20191207 .1 and subsequent builds will be incremented as 20191207 .2, 20191207 .3 ? and henceforth.

Now, let?s add our custom versioning, for this purpose I have declared two properties variables and name. Variables property has major and minor variables declared (You can declare these variables globally using variable groups and linking the variable group name to the pipeline)and name property has the custom versioning format.

When we build the YAML, our build will be versioned with 1.1.1 (major_version.minor_version.patch format) and subsequent builds will have 1.1.2,1.1.3,1.1.4?

Building and versioning PR builds and feature branches

Feature Branch Versioning:

As developers start working on feature branches and raise PR?s to merge into the main branch, we need to make sure the code quality is maintained by the code review process and successful PR builds. So we have to define a versioning system for these builds. Again, a lot of this depends on your branching strategy, this is just a versioning example of the common flow of software development.

Let?s start by creating a new feature branch from master, let?s call it feature_branch_changes. In this branch, we will add the below lines to the azure-pipelines.yml file so that our feature branch is versioned differently.

We have created a stage called Build_Branch_Version_Number, in which we have declared a condition that allows this stage to be run only if the branch is not master. Also, we have declared major and minor variables to 2 and 0.

If the branch is not master, it declares a variable called brpatch which uses a counter expression.

Counter expression in Azure DevOps: A counter expression increments the seed value based on its prefix value. Below, the seed value starts with 0, and the prefix value is variable minor i.e 1. Each run of the pipeline will increment its seed value. If we change the minor variable value to 2, the seed value resets to 0 as the prefix has changed. For more information visit: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/az...ns?view=azure-devops#counter

syntax: $[counter(variables[?prefix?], seed)]

In a similar way, we will use build.sourcebranchname as prefix and start our seed value with 0, so for each run of the pipeline, the value of variable brpatch will increment as 0,1,2?

As the next step, we will use Azure DevOps?s build.updatebuildnumber function to update the version of the running pipeline. This function will only run when the build.reason is not equal to Pull Request.

When we build the feature_branch_changes, we should see build number 2 .0-feature_branch_changes.0. All subsequent builds of the feature_branch_changes branch will be incremented like 2 .0-feature_branch_changes.1,2,3?n

We?re excited to announce that Auditing for Azure DevOps is now available for all organizations as a Public Preview! As Azure DevOps keeps growing and is adopted by enterprises, our customers have been demanding for the ability to monitor activities and changes throughout their organizations.

When an auditable event occurs, a log entry is recorded. These events may occur in any portion of Azure DevOps; some examples of auditable events include: Git repository creations, permission changes, resource deletions, code downloads, accessing the auditing feature, and much more.

The audit events include information such as who caused the event to be logged and their IP, what happened, and other useful details that can help you answer the who, what, when, and where questions.

We will be working over the next few months on enhancing auditing with new features. In the next quarter we?ll be working on a streaming feature which will allow you to send your logs to first and third party Security Incident and Event Management (SIEM) tools. The use of these tools along with auditing will give you more transparency into your workforce and allow for anomaly detection, trend visualization, and more!

The auditing feature can be found under the Organizations settings. For more information, see our documentation.

We?d love to hear your feedback as we continue to move towards making this feature generally available! You can share your thoughts directly with the product team using @AzureDevOps, Developer Community, or comment on this post.

I?m interviewed in a new book Devops Paradox

Post author

By Sean Hull
    Post date

I had the good fortune to be interviewed earlier in the year by Viktor Farcic. I?m excited to see the book finally released. You can pickup your own copy of Devops Paradox here.

Our interview is pretty wide ranging, touching on aspects of database administration, cloud operations, automation and devops.

1. Defining Devops

Viktor Farcic: Moving on to a more general subject, how would you define DevOps? I?ve gotten a different answer from every single person I?ve asked.

Sean Hull: I have a lot of opinions about it actually. I wrote an article on my blog a few years ago called The Four-Letter Word Dividing Dev and Ops, with the implication being that the four-letter word might be a swear word, akin to the development team swearing at the operations team, and the operations team swearing at the development team. But the four-letter word I was referring to was ?risk.?
To summarize my article, in my view the development and the operations teams of old were separate silos in business, and they had very different mandates. Developers are tasked with writing code to build a product and to answer the needs of the customers, while directly building change into and facilitating a more sophisticated product. So, their thinking from day to day is about change and answering the requirements of the products team.
On the other hand, the operations team?s mandate is stability. It?s, ?I don?t want these systems going down at 2:00 a.m.? So, over the long term, the operations teams are thinking about being as conservative as possible and having fewer moving parts, less code, and less new technologies. The simpler your stack is, the more reliable it is and the more robust and less likely it is to fail. I think the traditional reason why developers and operations teams were separated into silos was because of those two very different mandates.
They?re two different ways of prioritizing your work and your priorities when you think about the business and the technology. However, the downside was that those teams didn?t really communicate very well, and they were often at each other?s throats, pushing each other in opposite directions. But to answer your question, ?what is DevOps?? I think of DevOps as a cultural movement that has made efforts to allow those teams to communicate better, and that?s a really good thing.

2. How to adapt to change

Viktor Farcic: I have the impression that the speed with which new things are coming is only increasing. How do you keep up with it, and how do companies you work with keep up with all that?

Sean Hull: I don?t think they do keep up. I?ve gone to a lot of companies where they?ve never used serverless. None of their engineers know serverless at all. Lambda, web tasks, and Google Cloud functions have been out for a while, but I think there are very few companies that are able to really take advantage of them. I wrote another article blog post called Is Amazon Web Services Too Complex for Small Dev Teams? where I sort of implied that it is.
I do find a lot of companies want the advantage of on-demand computing, but they really don?t have the in-house expertise yet to really take advantage of all the things that Amazon can do and offer. That?s exactly why people aren?t up to speed on the technology, as it?s just changing so quickly. I?m not sure what the answer is. For me personally, there?s definitely a lot of stuff that I don?t know. I know I?m stronger in Python than I am with Node.js. Some companies have Node.js, and you can write Lambda functions in Java, Node.js, Python, and Go. So, I think Amazon?s investment in new technology allows the platform to evolve faster than a lot of companies are able to really take advantage of it.

3. What does the future hold for Devops?

Viktor Farcic: I?m going to ask you a question now that I hate being asked, so you?re allowed not to answer. Where do you see the future, let?s say a year from now?

unable to connect to Azure DevOps Server from VS 2019

I just installed Azure Devops 2019 on my server. I can access the devops server fine through the web portal but when I try to connect using VS 2019 - team explorer - manage connections - Add Azure Devops Server I get a error "TF400324: Azure DevOps Service are not available from server http://xx.xx.xx.xx:8080/tfs."

I also see that VS add :8080/tfs to the IP I add. But thats not the correct adress. When using Team Foundation Server this adress was valid but Azure Devops does not use the same.

So how can I connect to the new Azure DevOps server from VS 2019?

1 Answer 1

So how can I connect to the new Azure DevOps server from VS 2019?

1.Close all VS instances and then clean VS cache( %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\16.xxx\ComponentModelCache ) and TFS cache( %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Team Foundation\xx\Cache ).

2.Go to Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Manage your Credential -> Windows Credential, select the VSTS url to remove it.

3.Restart VS to re-connect to Devops server.

In addition:

1.Make sure you enter the correct URL. In VS if I don't enter correct URL of tfs instance, I would get this error:

2.Many factors can cause TF400324 , just like above. So it could be better if you can share more details about your TF400324 , remote name not resolve , Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel or what.

The great and the good of the cloud computing community gathered at the Rackspace DevOps Breakfast Panel Debate this week in London?s glittering Soho district.

Attending this month?s ?discussion panel breakdown session? were speakers from DevOps Guys, Dataloop, Skelton Thatcher, Eagle Eye and, obviously, Rackspace.

Stephen Thair ? ?co-founder of DevOps Guys said the he believes in DevOps automation as so many of his customers have problems with Continuous Delivery.

Chris Jackson ? cloud technologist and head of Rackspace?s DevOps Practice Area said that he recognising there is a lot of automation in DevOps and that his company (with its very up front ?Fanatical? support offering) recognises that it now needs to address the intersection of support with automation.

The learning, learnings

The difference between ITIL and DevOps is that ITIL has a huge amount of information to draw upon, but that DevOps could (if it is done properly) is proposing an alternative model that has a perhaps more practical implementation these days with more iterative feedback into the ongoing state of the project?.

? and it is this, centrally, that makes DevOps a learning process.

DevOps is a commitment to learning and experimentation (more so than a straight Waterfall development methodology).

Rackspace?s Jackson is a huge fan of the CALMS acronym:

Culture,

Automation,

Lean,

Measurement or Metrics and,

Sharing.

This discussion moved (as might be expected) onward to whether DevOps was a technical issue or a human cultural issue ? despite audience protestations that it must be one or the other, the majority of speakers agreed that DevOps is both a human and a technical issue.

Speakers here suggested that a good route into DevOps (as a new cultural approach) could be to apply it to a smaller application inside the total IT stack and use this as test bed to bring wider DevOps approaches into an organisation ? the challenge here will be finding an application that is ?separated enough? from the rest of the IT stack? but it can be done.

?Organisations must be set up to enable software systems to evolve over time ? DevOps enables this. DevOps enables the flow of metrics-based intelligence from production back to development,? said Matthew Skelton, co-founder and principal consultant at Skelton Thatcher Consulting Ltd.

?Successful DevOps adoptions address the interaction technology AND teams to build and operate software systems effectively,? added Skelton.

Old DevOps is a waste of time

Other suggestions emanating from this event included the suggestion that ?traditional DevOps? (i.e. not delivered as a cloud service) could in fact be a (comparative) waste of time for what are skilled systems administrators?

? what do we mean by waste of time?

If a sysadmin has to spend HOURS of time working to build operational servers, then isn?t that a waste of skilled time if that server could be bought from a cloud supplier? The sysadmin could be doing something else more complex, more business-value-add and more live.

Yes, you would expect cloud (an DevOps as a service) vendors to say this kind of thing, but it is arguably quite an interesting proposition.

Chef devops World news today live Chef devops

DevOps tools: The beginner's guide to Chef

Configuration management 101

In the DevOps model, developers and system operators work closely together throughout the software development process to deploy software more frequently and more reliably. Many new third party and proprietary tools have been developed to support automation, measurement and sharing.

Chef: "IT automation for speed and awesomeness"

Chef is a configuration management tool for dealing with machine setup on physical servers, virtual machines and in the cloud. Many companies use Chef software to control and manage their infrastructure including Facebook, Etsy, Cheezburger, and Indiegogo.

But what does that really mean?

Configuration management is all about trying to ensure that the files and software you are expecting to be on a machine are present, configured correctly, and working as intended.

When you have only a single machine this is fairly simple. When you have five or ten servers, it is still possible to do this manually, but it may take all day. However, when your infrastructure scales up into the thousands we need a better way of doing things.

Infrastructure as code

Chef helps solve this problem by treating infrastructure as code. Rather than manually changing anything, the machine setup is described in a Chef recipe.

Collections of recipes are stored in a cookbook. One cookbook should relate to a single task, but can have a number of different server configurations involved (for example a web application with a database, will have two recipes, one for each part, stored together in a cookbook).

There is a Chef server which stores each of these cookbooks and as a new chef client node checks in with the server, recipes are sent to tell the node how to configure itself.

The client will then check in every now and again to make sure that no changes have occurred, and nothing needs to change. If it does, then the client deals with it. Patches and updates can be rolled out over your entire infrastructure by changing the recipe. No need to interact with each machine individually.

Chef configuration

Recipes and cookbooks are the heart of the configuration management. They are written using the Ruby programming language, however, the domain specific language used by Chef is designed to be able to be understood by everyone. As the configuration is just code it can be tested and it can be version controlled. This means that there is less downtime, more reliable services and less stressed people on both the dev and ops sides.

Figure 2: Chef config files to install Apache and add a hello world html page

So why is it awesome?

You want more? How about Chef Analytics - the ability to visualise everything going on in real time. It will check if something is going wrong and notify you before the problem becomes noticeable to your clients.

The Chef development kit allows you to write and manage your chef infrastructure from any machine and any operating system.

Chef's Knife allows you to manage the interface between your Chef bookshelf (the repository) and your chef server. The high availability and replication feature allows you to ensure that even if something goes wrong, the chef server is able to adapt and recreate your infrastructure as required, without outside help. ?

What Are the Differences between Agile, Lean, and DevOps?

Delivering value to customers with high-quality products and quick services is an incredibly important requirement for project teams. Methodologies like Agile, Lean, and DevOps were created to help organizations accomplish this. All three work toward this common goal, but each of them is unique.

What are the differences and how can they be implemented together? We talked to Ademar Albertin, product owner at EXIN, about the differences and similarities between these three methodologies.

1. What are the core values of Lean, Agile, and DevOps? What is their focus?

To answer this question, we need to look at their history and which needs were address ed with their creation.

Before the se practices were adopted, the Waterfall methodology was a good fit as it followed a structured and logical process. However, with the digital development of businesses, it was not flexible enough to respond to the changing needs of the customers. This rigidity often resulted in the loss of a lot of time, money and valuable resources. Mainly because teams only tested and adapted a product after they delivered it. Or ganizations and professionals need ed a more efficient structure in their projects so that they could guarantee the delivery of a product or service in line with the quality requirements.

During the 1990s, software developers started to pick up Lean practices. Lean originated in the Japanese manufacturing industry just after the second world war and focuses on improving cost, quality, and delivery time by removing waste from processes.

Later, in 2001, a group of software development professionals felt it was time to break away from traditional approaches and put the focus on individuals, working products/services, customer collaboration, and responding to change. The result of their meeting, the Agile Manifesto, was a collaborative effort by these 17 professionals. This shift to Agile was a remarkable moment in the history of software development because of the changes it brought to the way projects were managed.

In addition to this shift, technolog ical improvements meant that consumers were more likely to be part of the project by providing feedback and interacting in real-time with IT teams. This change caused Lean and Agile practices to be embraced by the IT community, which in turn led to exponential growth in project management effectiveness.

However, there was still a well-known problem in every organization: the gap between d evelopment and o perational teams. DevOps emerged to fill this gap and create synergy between the teams. This methodology grew out of a combination of Lean and Agile principles.

With this background in mind, my answer to the question makes sense:

Lean, Agile, and DevOps focus on organizational culture by creating multidisciplinary teams, reducing waste, focusing on the customer, embracing change, and continuously delivering value. These methodologies appeared at different times to fulfill different needs.

2. What teams can apply these three methods/approaches?

Although Lean, Agile, and DevOps have their origins in Software Development teams, it?s not only these teams that can use them. Lean and Agile practices can benefit every department of an organization. Due to its characteristics, DevOps is more likely to be used in IT Departments, but there is no restriction on what type of department can adopt and use DevOps.

3 How do the three methods interact with each other? Can they all be applied in an organization?

Organizations can use each of these three practices without restrictions. Organizations must, however, take an in-depth look at the benefits they would like to take advantage of to decide on the best approach for them. As DevOps has its roots in Lean and Agile, organizations should not forget that it could be beneficial to use DevOps for small projects while they invest in organizational culture. After using it for small projects, they can move on to implementing it in more complex scenarios.

4 Why do some people confuse these methodologies or think they are virtually the same? And what are the main differences?

The confusion arises from the fact that DevOps shares its roots with Lean and Agile. Although these methodologies share many similarities, at their core, there are differences.

Lean was created for manufacturing and then adopted by the IT field. The main focus is to eliminate waste during the project process.

Agile is meant to create a culture of agility for the whole organization and is more of a mindset than a framework.

DevOps came about to help IT departments unite the development and operational teams whilst embracing Lean and Agile methodologies.

5 How does EXIN address the three methods/practices?

EXIN develops professional certifications for the three areas. These programs guarantee that professionals gain the skills necessary to use the practices beneficially for themselves and their organizations.

EXIN?s Lean IT program is created by LITA, a collaboration between training organizations and exam providers, providing an industry standard for Lean IT education.

EXIN?s Agile Scrum program combines Agile practices with the Scrum methodology so that professionals understand both the Scrum framework as well as the Agile mindset.

EXIN?s DevOps program was created with DevOps experts and includes levels that suit every career stage?there is a certificate for each professional.

Software Engineering

In Azure DevOps, Pipelines can be used to build your solution, create a Nuget package and publish the Nuget package to the Nuget feed for further usage. This post shows how you can implement this and use the new Nuget package in Visual Studio.

Setup Azure DevOps project and git Repository

Open the required Azure DevOps project, or create a new Azure DevOps project. Add a Pipeline build. This demo will create a Nuget package from a .NET Standard library using .NET Core. The yml file is created and added to the git source code.

The dotnet core pipeline is used.

Create a Nuget Feed

A Nuget feed can be created in the Artifacts.

Open the feed settings and add the permission for the build agent identity. The build agent requires this permission to deploy the Nuget package to the feed.

Pack the .NET Core library

Create a new pack task in the yml pipeline file. This task does a dotnet pack for all csproj files.

Azure Devops Pipelines also provides a UI to help you create the yml code.

Push the Nuget package to the Nuget Feed

Create a Pipeline task to publish the nupkg files. The task uses nupkg files created in the pack task, and pushes them to the feed.

Azure Devops provides a UI for implementing the yml code. The publishVstsFeed property is set using the target.

When you run a build, the Nuget packages should be deployed to the feed.

Add the Nuget feed to Visual Studio

In Visual Studio you need to add a new package source to the Nuget feeds. You can get the Nuget feed from the build logs. The source feed ends with index.json.

When you open the Nuget Manager for your project, the new feed can be selected on the right hand side drop down, and the published packages can be used.

Azure DevOps or TFS Build Pipeline SetupUsage

Basic Usage

In Azure DevOps Pipeline (the web based build system) you can call GitVersion either using the Command Line build step or install an extension / custom build step. The custom build step requires a one-time setup to import the GitVersion task into your TFS or Azure DevOps Pipeline instance.

Executing GitVersion

Using GitVersion with the MSBuild Task NuGet Package

Add the GitVersionTask NuGet package to your projects.

See MSBuild Task for further instructions how to use the MS Build Task.

Using GitVersion with the Command Line build step

Make sure to have GitVersion.exe under version control. There exists also a Chocolatey package for installing GitVersion.exe on build agents.

Add a Command Line build step to your build definition. You'll probably want to drag the task to be at or near the top to ensure it executes before your other build steps.

Set the Tool parameter to

\GitVersion.exe .

Set the Arguments parameter to /output buildserver /nofetch .

If you want the GitVersionTask to update AssemblyInfo files add updateAssemblyInfo true to the Arguments parameter.

If you want to update the build number you need to send a logging command to TFS.

Using the custom GitVersion build step

Installing

Installing the extension

For Visual Studio Team Service or TFS 2015 Update 2 or higher it is recommended to install the GitVersion extension:

Manually installing/updating the custom build step

If you run TFS 2015 RTM or Update 1 or don't want to install the GitVersion extension you can install the build task manually:

Install the tfx command line tool as shown here.

For TFS 2015 On-Prem configure Basic Authentication in TFS as shown here.

Download the GitVersion TFS build task from the latest release on the GitVersion releases page and unzip.

Run tfx login as shown here.

From the directory outside of where you unzipped the task, run tfx build tasks upload --task-path .\GitVersionVsixTask --overwrite where GitVersionVsixTask is the directory containing the files.

It should successfully install.

Using the GitVersion custom build step

From a TFS build definition, select "Add a Step" and then in the Build category, choose GitVersion and click Add. You'll probably want to drag the task to be at or near the top to ensure it executes before your other build steps.

If you want the GitVersionTask to update AssemblyInfo files, check the box in the task configuration. For advanced usage, you can pass additional options to the GitVersion exe in the Additional arguments section.

The Azure DevOps Pipeline build step can update your build number with GitVersion variables. See below for details.

Using Pipelines yaml

Add the following yaml task and variable to your azure-pipelines.yml file:

You can now use the GitVersion.SemVer environment variable in any subsequent tasks to refer to the semantic version number for your build. For example, you can build your dotnet core application with a semantic version number like so:

Running inside TFS

Using the GitVersion Variables

GitVersion passes variables in the form of GitVersion.* (Eg: GitVersion.Major ) to TFS Build and also writes GITVERSION.* (Eg: GITVERSION.MAJOR ) environment variables that are available for any subsequent build step.

To use these variables you can just refer to them using the standard variable syntax. For instance $(GitVersion.NuGetVersion) in your nuget pack task to set the version number. Since update 1 there are no known limitations.

See Variables for an overview of available variables.

Using GitVersion variables in build name

To use GitVersion's variables in the build name, just add them in the form $(GITVERSION_FullSemVer) into the Build definition's build number string. Then just ensure GitVersion is called with /output buildserver and it will replace those variables with the calculated version. The TFS GitVersion Build Step (above) handles this too, so if you're already using that, there's nothing extra to configure.

If GitVersion does not find any substitutions it will just default to using FullSemVer

Important

If you currently use $(rev:.r) in your build number, that won't work correctly if you use GitVersion variables as well due to the delayed expansion of the GitVersion vars. Instead, you might be able to use $(GitVersion_BuildMetaData) to achieve a similar result. See Variables for more info on the variables.

This chapter is from the book ?

One methodology cannot possibly be the ?right? one, but. there is an appropriate, different way of working for each project and project team. 1

?Alistair Cockburn

Figure 2.1. The rhythm of a crew rowing in unison is a perfect example of flow in both the human and management senses. Individuals experience the elation of performing optimally, and the coordinated teamwork enables the system as a whole (here, the boat) to achieve its optimum performance. It?s the ideal feeling of a ?sprint.?

The preceding chapter discussed the Agile Consensus of the past decade. That chapter distinguished between complicated projects, with well-controlled business or technical risk, and complex ones, where the technology and business risks are greater. Most new software projects are complex; otherwise, the software would not be worth building.

This chapter covers the next level of detail?the characteristics of software engineering and management practices, the ?situationally specific? contexts to consider, and the examples that you can apply in Visual Studio (VS). In this chapter, you learn about the mechanisms that VS (primarily Team Foundation Server [TFS]) provides to support the team enacting the process. Whereas Chapter 1, ?The Agile Consensus,? gave an outside-in view of what a team needs, this chapter provides an inside-out overview of the tooling that makes the enactment possible.

Visual Studio and Process Enactment

Through three classes of mechanisms, VS helps the team follow a defined software process:

As illustrated in Chapter 1, TFS captures backlogs, workflow, status, and metrics. Together, these keep the work transparent and guide the users to the next appropriate actions. TFS also helps ensure the ?doneness? of work so that the team cannot accrue technical debt without warning and visibility.

Each team project tracked by TFS starts off with a process template that defines the standard workflows, reports, roles, and artifacts for the process. These are often changed later during the course of the team project as the team learns and tunes its process, but their initial defaults are set according to the chosen process template.

On the IDE clients (VS or Eclipse), there are user experiences that interact with the server to ensure that the policies are followed and that any warnings from policy violations are obvious.
