Python for DevOps: Python Scripting Tutorial for Beginners

Information Technology is not like it used to be before. Most of the sysadmin tasks are getting automated using tools and scripting languages. Which includes configuration management tools like chef, puppet, Ansible, etc and scripting languages like shell scripting, python, ruby, etc.

Also, the way people and teams worked has changed drastically in recent years with the advent of new philosophies such as DevOps and methodologies like Agile.

Unl ike before, different teams have started working together and there is more and more automation from application development to deployment. vagrant and docker made developers? life so easy by reducing the time to set up, test development environments.

Cloud computing has drastically changed the way how servers are provisioned. You don?t need to wait for days to get a server provisioned for your application deployment. With a few clicks, you will have your server ready for deployment. The process gets easier by writing automation scripts for server provisioning and configuration. One such example is the python boto library. Using boto sdk you can automate AWS server provisioning.

What python has to do with DevOps?

Python is one of the best scripting languages. The vast availability of python libraries allows you to write scripts that could communicate with system internals, manipulate files, strings, manage networks and so on.

Once you learn python, you can write automation scripts in a well-structured way. Moreover, every Linux system today comes bundled with python.

Many DevOps teams use python for building custom utilities, web apps for custom data visualization and more. The main reason is, it?s easy to learn and you can develop utilities in days rather than months.

Besides, tools like ansible are purely written in python. You can develop custom ansible modules for your automation tasks. Also, it is not limited to just Ansible, there are many tools written in python that lets you create custom scripts to work with them better.

So, there are enough reasons why you should learn python for automating manual tasks.

I keep getting the error: We couldn't connect to Azure DevOps with your credentials. What could be the cause of this?

Although SourceTree for macOS has updated the name of Azure DevOps (from "Visual Studio Team Services"), it appears that it does not support the new Azure DevOps URLs.

You can use the old-format (VSTS-style) URLs. Instead of https://dev.azure.com/username , you can use https://username.visualstudio.com .

Ironically, it seems that SourceTree for Windows still calls the product "Visual Studio Team Services" but supports the new-style Azure DevOps URLs.)

You need to set up a Personal Access Token.

Personal access tokens (PATs) are alternate passwords that you can use to authenticate in to Azure DevOps and Team Foundation Server (TFS). In this article, we walk you through how to create or revoke PATS.

Azure DevOps Services and TFS use enterprise-grade authentication to help protect and secure your data. Clients like Visual Studio and Eclipse (with the Team Explorer Everywhere plug-in) also support Microsoft account and Azure AD authentication.

For non-Microsoft tools that integrate into Azure DevOps but don't support Microsoft account or Azure AD authentication, you must use PATs. Examples include Git, NuGet, or Xcode. To set up PATs for non-Microsoft tools, use Git credential managers or create them manually.

Copy commits from one branch to another using cherry-pick. Unlike a merge or rebase, cherry-pick only brings the changes from the commits you select, instead of all the changes in a branch.

Cherry-pick is a great way to tackle these common problems:

Accidentally committing on the wrong branch. Cherry-pick the change(s) over to the correct branch and then reset the original branch to the previous commit.

Pulling out a set of commits made in a feature branch so you merge them back to your master branch sooner.

Porting in specific commits from the master branch without rebasing your branch.

In this tutorial you learn how to:

Cherry-pick a commit

Cherry-pick a commit

Open up Team Explorer and checkout to the branch you want to cherry-pick changes into using the Branches view.

Right-click the branch containing the changes you want and select View History. .

Right-click the commit you want to cherry-pick and select Cherry-pick.

Visual Studio copies the changes made in that commit into a new one on your current branch.

Repeat this process for each commit you need to bring over to your current branch.

Use git log to find the commit ID of the commit whose changes you want to copy.

Once you have the commit ID, you pass it to git cherry-pick to copy the changed into your current branch.

If you need to cherry-pick a range of commits, you can use two commit IDs separated by . to specify a range in your history.

Export Azure DevOps Pipeline Created with Task Groups from One Team Project to Another

While configuring build and deployment pipelines in Azure DevOps , we can create a new pipeline from the scratch or export existing pipeline from another Azure DevOps team project and update the values as relevant to the current project. You can export Azure DevOps build and release pipelines from one project to another project regardless these project in same organization or different organization using the mechanism explained here.

As explained in the above mentioned blog, you can export the pipeline from the Azure DevOps project and replace the project id in the downloaded json file with the destination project id.After that you can import the updated json to destination Azure DevOps project to create a pipeline. You can export build pipelines among projects using the mechanism explained above. But if you have used task groups in the build pipelines you may get an issue in the exported pipeline similar to shown below, even though you have imported the required task groups to the target team project before importing the pipeline.Task group tasks shows an error similar to "This task is no longer installed. Re-install the task or remove it .. "

Reason for the above issue is task groups also have a unique ID value in each team project. These ID are referred the pipelines, and exists in the exported json files. The IDs of the task groups in the exported json files of the pipelines is referring to the source team project, which need to be replaced with the target project. If we import the pipeline only after replacing the team project ID explained in the post here, it gives the error in the imported build/release pipeline similar to shown in the above image.

To fix the issue task group ID also need to be get replaced with the target task group ID as explained below. First you need to find the task group ID. The task group ID can be found from the url of the task group in the source team project and the target team project.

Now you can replace the existing task group ID of the exported pipelines json file with target team project task group IDs. After that import the json file to target Azure DevOps team project. Then you would be able to see pipeline is created with the task groups without giving any errors.

This blog discussed the issue faced while importing Azure DevOps build/release pipeline from one team project to another team project, which are using task groups. We have learned if the task groups are used in the build/release pipelines, task group IDs also need to be replaced with the target team project task group IDs before importing the json to the target team project.

Amazon ECR Push task

(Amazon Elastic Container Registry Push Image Task)

Synopsis

Pushes a Docker image identified by name, with optional tag, or image ID to the Amazon Elastic Container Registry (ECR).

Description

This task pushes a Docker image to the Elastic Container Registry. The image to push can be identified using its image ID or by name, with optional tag suffix. The task handles the work of appropriately tagging the image as required by ECR and also the login process to your registry prior to executing the Docker Push command.

Parameters

You can set the following parameters for the task. Required parameters are noted by an asterisk (*). Other parameters are optional.

Display name*

The default name of the task instance, which can be modified: Push Image

AWS Credentials

Specifies the AWS credentials to be used by the task in the build agent environment.

You can specify credentials using a service endpoint (of type AWS) in the task configuration or you can leave unspecified. If unspecified the task will attempt to obtain credentials from the following sources in order:

From task variables named AWS.AccessKeyID, AWS.SecretAccessKey and optionally AWS.SessionToken.

From credentials set in environment variables in the build agent process. When using environment variables in the build agent process you may use the standard AWS environment variables: AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID, AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY and optionally AWS_SESSION_TOKEN.

If the build agent is running on an Amazon EC2 instance, from the instance metadata associated with the EC2 instance. For credentials to be available from EC2 instance metadata the instance must have been started with an instance profile referencing a role granting permissions to the task to make calls to AWS on your behalf. For more information, see Using an IAM role to grant permissions to applications running on Amazon EC2 instances.

AWS Region

The AWS Region code (for example, us-east-1, us-west-2) of the Region containing the AWS resources the task will use or create. For more information, see Regions and endpoints in the Amazon Web Services General Reference.

If a Region is not specified in the task configuration the task will attempt to obtain the Region to be used using the standard AWS environment variable AWS_REGION in the build agent process's environment. Tasks running in build agents hosted on Amazon EC2 instances (Windows or Linux) will also attempt to obtain the Region using the instance metadata associated with the EC2 instance if no Region is configured on the task or set in the environment variable.

Note: The Regions listed in the picker are those known at the time this software was released. New Regions that are not listed may still be used by entering the region code of the Region (for example, us_west_2).

Image Identity*

How the image to be pushed is identified. You can select from either the image ID or the image name. If image name is selected a tag can also be specified.

Source Image Name

The name of the image to push. Required if Image Identity is set to Image name with optional tag.

Source Image Tag

Optional tag that can be suffixed to the image name. If a tag is not specified, 'latest' is assumed.

Source Image ID

The ID of the image to push. Required if Image Identity is set to Image ID.

Target Repository Name*

The name of the repository to which the image will be pushed.

Target Repository Tag

Optional tag for the new image in the repository. If not specified, ECR will assume 'latest'.

Create repository if it does not exist

If checked, the task will check to see if the repository exists and if it does not, will attempt to create it.

Image Tag Output Variable

The name of a build variable that will be created or updated with the pushed image reference. The image tag will be of the form aws_account_id.dkr.ecr.region.amazonaws.com/imagename, where imagename is in the format repositoryname[:tag]

Task Permissions

This task requires permissions to call the following AWS service APIs (depending on selected task options, not all APIs may be used):

Mainframe Modernization

Transform the IBM i-series/AS400 with DevOps: It's possible

i-series is an IBM midrange computer system used extensively by many large insurance firms, retail businesses and banks. Being a legacy platform, projects executed on it generally follow the conventional waterfall development and slow releases.

Today's environment demands agility. Can you transform your i-series and be agile - YES. Have we done it - YES. Let me help you understand with an example.

Here was the problem!

A leading global bank was embarking on a transformation program and wanted to reduce system downtime during scheduled outages of their Core application by routing the requests to a 'stand-by' application to provide business critical services.

The challenge was that the core platform was a 25-year-old monolithic application built on i-series and the entire concept to reality had to be achieved under very stringent timelines. Our team was up for it and we addressed the problem by successful implementation of DevOps & adopting agile principles. This is the first time it has been attempted by any service provider.

How did we address the problem?

Infosys partnered with the client's tooling team and spearheaded the DevOps pipeline implementation. The deliveries happened in a MVP manner and shippable components were ready after every 2 sprints.

Tools adopted:

How did the client realize value from the solution?

And our teams in turn benefitted from:

This journey however was not easy and we were faced with multiple challenges. DevOps tools for i-series were unexplored and we didn't have any SMEs available. Additionally, the application built across geographies added to the complexity making cleaning up of the non-standard source code types a tedious and prolonged activity. The biggest challenge was to change the team's mindset to move out of the conventional way of doing things and step into the new world.

What made this even more difficult was that for stand-by application to perform its required task when the main application is down, it had to be installed on a separate iASP (Independent Auxiliary Storage Pool) from the main application.

Based on ARCAD consulting, it was suggested to install one ARCAD instance per iASP which would come with a heavy licensing cost.

We did a PoC to move the ARCAD installation into system pool (SYBAS) from the iASP and this instance was accessible across all iASPs. This in turn provided a saving of around 78,000 USD

It was a challenging task (took us almost 3 months to implement the entire pipeline) but surely not impossible - and made us the pioneers in implementing DevOps on i-series while adopting agile principles. I would love to hear your views and recommendations if you have done similar work at your clients.

Creating Azure DevOps WIKI Pages from within a pipeline - part 2

Contents

This is part 2 of a blog post series about creating Azure DevOps WIKI pages from within a Pipeline.

If you have not read part 1, please do so first.

Scenario

The scenario for demonstrating the creation of an Azure DevOps WIKI pages from within a Pipeline is the creation of documentation (WIKI page) for each Azure Resource Deployment being made via an Azure DevOps Pipeline.

Below a screenshot of the end result, being documentation for an Azure Resource Deployment of an Azure Logic App.

The goal is to have a similar Wiki document created for each of the Azure Resource Deployments being made via an Azure DevOps Pipeline.

Solution

Documentation details

The documentation contains the following sections:

Title

Parameters

Variables

Resources

Deployment information

ARM Preview

The following table shows the sources for each of above sections:

Section

Source

Title

Metadata file

Parameters

ARM Template file

Variables

ARM Template file

Resources

ARM Template file

Deployment information

PSDocs template file

ARM Preview

ARM Template file

Metadata file

This metadata file is something I re-used from the documentation of the PSDocs PowerShell Module.

ARM Template

For the deployment I used an ARM Template file to deploy an Azure Logic App which I used in a customer demo about Automation some time ago.

Note: Not showing the parameter file because that was not used for the creation of documentation.

The ARM Template was iterated with the following code to retrieve the information I was looking for.

ARM Preview

For the ARM Preview part of the document I used Mermaid to create an diagram overview of the Resource Dependencies.

Mermaid

Azur DevOps Wiki supports Mermaid Diagrams.

Mermaid is a simple markdown-like script language for generating charts from text via JavaScript.

With some custom PowerShell code and the PowerShell Mermaid Module PSMermaid a very simple ARM Preview Diagram was created.

You can install the PowerShell Module with the following code:

For the creation of the ARM Preview Diagram I used the following PowerShell Functions. First we use the earlier shared Helper Function to parse the ARM Template file. The next helper Function New-MermaildResourceDiagram creates the Mermaid diagram code to be used in the Markdown document.

When you run the Function New-MermaidResourceDiagram you get the following output:

PSDocs Template

To create the Markdown document the following PSDocs Template is being used.

Create Markdown deployment document and publishing script

If we put everything together in one script to create the ARM Template Markdown document and publish the document to the Azure DevOps wiki the following code can be used.

Azure DevOps Pipeline

In the final step we are going to put everything together in an Azure DevOps Pipeline. The following steps need to be executed.

Configure permissions on Azure DevOps wiki repository to publish document

Deploy the Azure Logic App

Create Markdown documentation of Azure Resource deployment and publish to wiki

Permissions on Azure DevOps wiki repository

To have the deployment Markdown document being published to the Azure DevOps wiki (repository) the security on the Wiki needs to be configured. Confgure the Contribute setting to allow for the Project Collection Build Service.

Yaml pipeline

The yaml pipeline to execute above steps should look like this:

Azure App Service settings from Azure DevOps

This post is an interesting post to be writing, something that would seem straight forward has turned out not to be or else I wouldn?t be writing about it. While trying to deploy a .NET full framework app to Azure App Service using Azure DevOps I needed to update a few app setting keys and a connection string. This task would seem to be something that would be straight forward, but it wasn?t. I am going to start with the hard lessons I learned first.

What doesn?t work

A few of the app setting keys need set to an empty string along with a connection string. After several different attempts I discovered that regardless of the method, you can?t configure a setting to an empty string using Azure DevOps, Azure Portal, or CLI tooling. Another lesson that I learned is that trying to set a connection string using the Azure App Service Deploy Task doesn?t like whitespaces like the one that would be in a SQL Server connection string. Whitespace was causing the setting value to split across multiple lines. The Azure CLI has the same difficulty with the whitespace due to an escaping issue that I couldn?t determine a way to mitigate.

Sample Application

I have a sample application called ado-ff-test that I created with the following app settings and connection strings set. These are specific to the different ways we are going to configure each of these settings.

Here are the app settings.

The connection string.

I then configured a pipeline using the Azure Web App for ASP .NET build template.

Now we can get started demonstrating the different techniques.

Using the Azure App Service Deploy task

The default Azure App Service Deploy task allows you to set App Settings, but it doesn?t let you configure connection strings in a .NET Full framework app. It will work fine for ASP .NET Core because it is JSON.

To set app settings using the task you need to open the Application and Configuration Settings section and add the setting to the App Settings. Here is what it looks like setting the *TaskSettings key above.

Now remember this doesn?t work for connection strings, so let?s see how to set those using the XML substitution.

XML Variable Substitution

This only works for items in Application Settings, App Settings, and Connection Strings section of your configuration file. It took me a few passes at reading it before it clicked with me how it works.

The first step is to turn it on in the Azure App Service Deploy task by going to the File Transforms and Variable Substitution Options section and checking the box next to the XML variable substition.

Then add a build variable to your build that matches the key and connection string you want to replace and bam!

When it deploys, you will see the following in your build output for that step. These types of changes will not be displayed directly in the Azure Portal, but if you look, you will see those in the web.config on the server.

Azure CLI

If you don?t want to make these changes in your web.config, but you want to see these in the Azure Portal as overrides, then you can make this change with the Azure CLI. You need to add the Azure CLI task and use the following command. However, know that this will not work for connection strings that have spaces in their names.

Add an Azure CLI task to your build.

And your task should look like this.

PowerShell

This method isn?t going to be all that different, so I will not be showing it. However, at the time of this post, version 4 of the Azure PowerShell task hasn?t been released so you will need to use the AzureRM module, not the newer Azure Az Module set of commands.

Final Results

Here is what is located on the server side web.config.

And this is what shows in the portal.

So as you can see the items set with the Task or with the Azure CLI get added to the Azure Portal as override values. If you use the XML substitution, you will not see those in the portal, but you can see those changes if you look at the web.config on the server.

Conclusion

That?s it, and this is just a quick overview of the different ways to configure your app settings and or connection strings in Azure App Service using Azure DevOps. Learning these different options was a necessity, and something that I wouldn?t have thought would have been so difficult, alas it was difficult.

Server Configuration

The configuration files are stored as JSON files. Consul has built-in encryption support using a shared-secret system for the gossip protocol.

In the terminal, we can use the Consul command to generate a key of the necessary length and encoding as follows:

It should be the same for all the servers and clients in a datacenter. If it's different the consul members will refuse to join.

Create the first file in the /etc/consul.d/server directory in server1.example.com (IP Address: 192.168.1.11). Use the encryption key generated above as the value for the "encrypt" key in the JSON.

More information on what each key means can be found in the documentation.

You should copy the contents of this configuration file to the other machines that will be acting as your Consul servers. Place them in the same location just like you did in the first server.

The only value you need to modify on the other servers is the IP addresses that it should attempt to listen on - the value of the 'bind_addr' key.

Starting the cluster

Now we have everything in place to get a consul cluster up and running.

Start server1.example.com first.

The service should start up and occupy the terminal window. It will attempt to connect to the two other servers and keep retrying until they are up.

Now start Consul in the other two servers (server2.example.com, server3.example.com) in the same manner.

These servers (server2.example.com, server3.example.com) will connect to the server1.example.com, completing the cluster with one of the servers as the leader and the other two as followers.

You can see the members of the cluster (servers and clients) by asking consul for its members on any of the machines:

Node

Address

Status

Type

Build

Protocol

DC

ConsulServer1

192.168.1.11:8301

alive

server

0.6.4

2

dc1

ConsulServer2

192.168.1.12:8301

alive

server

0.6.4

2

dc1

ConsulServer3

192.168.1.13:8301

alive

server

0.6.4

2

dc1

The cluster is fully operational now and applications can connect. We'll configure and start the client next.
