Pluralsight and Azure — a great opportunity to accelerate your path to Azure expert, for free

In the last decade, the cloud has become one of the most important technologies for businesses of all types and from all sectors. Naturally, this has led to an increase in the demand for people with the skills required to architect, set up, work with and maximize cloud environments and cloud-based applications. An increase in demand for skills is naturally accompanied by a need for more and better training, and certification. As the technology changes, so too does the learning landscape. Pluralsight, a rapidly expanding online learning platform, is transforming the way technologists (and other professionals) enhance their skillsets and develop their careers. For IT professionals looking to up their cloud game, there’s a great way to leverage the partnership between Pluralsight and Microsoft and start on the path to becoming an Azure expert … for free!

Micha? Pawlikowski, Business Intelligence Consultant at ITMAGINATION, explains how …

Exactly 248 courses with a combined duration of almost 500 hours. That’s how much Azure training material there was at the time of writing this post (end of January 2020). What’s the cost of accessing this vault of career-enhancing education? Zero. That’s right. Absolutely nothing. This is the result of a partnership between Microsoft and Pluralsight.

If you’re an IT professional and want to accelerate your transformation into Azure expert or simply need to refresh your knowledge, this is too good to miss. The Azure-specific materials available on Pluralsight complement the materials available on learning hubs like Microsoft Learn (where training and documentation is presented predominately in text form) and Microsoft Hands-on Labs (where users are provisioned virtual environments and are able to work with Azure, albeit in a limited way). And, of course, Microsoft provides plenty of other ways to enhance and keep your Azure skills up to date.

The benefits of Pluralsight for existing and aspiring IT professionals

As a one-stop shop for meeting training needs Pluralsight offers several compelling benefits for IT professionals — existing and aspiring. There are options to choose specific learning paths, obtain certification and even check your level of competence or expertise within a specific domain (Pluralsight calls this Skills IQ). Indeed, with the last point and the ability to submit to some form of evaluation, the platform creates interesting possibilities to establish recognized standards for expertise, which could be useful for recruitment, project-team building, career development conversations, and much more.

How can you gain access to free Microsoft Azure courses on Pluralsight?

All you have to do is visit the Microsoft Azure page on Pluralsight and sign up or log in using an existing account. If you have an account but not a paid-up subscription, your account will be granted free access. Every user can automatically get access to the library of Azure courses for five years.

Tools to structure and enhance your learning journey — Channels, Paths and Role IQs

After you’ve logged in, you’ll have the opportunity to explore and embark upon your learning journey. There are some great tools (or in Pluralsight’s words, ‘products’) that can help you to get started and keep track of your progress. Channels are a great way to organize and share Pluralsight content, which enables you to define your direction and also define development directions and curricula for your peers and team members.

Paths combine specific tools and courses into a curated experience that empowers learners to develop new skills or take significant development or career steps from start to finish. Along the way, learners can test their knowledge and skills to ensure they’re benefiting as they should be.

The Role IQ feature enables users to test their current knowledge or skills in a particular domain. In this way, people using the platform can get a proper understanding of their level of technical proficiency and can learn about the steps they need to take to elevate their status. Role IQs are organized according to roles and professional titles that learners either currently occupy, aspire to occupy, or simply to broaden their knowledge. Examples of this include Azure AI Engineer, Data Engineer and Data Scientist.

How to become an Azure expert with Pluralsight

Using the free subscription for Azure learning, a dedicated page has been set up to provide easy access to Azure-specific Role IQs, such as Microsoft Azure Administrator, Microsoft Azure Developer, Microsoft Azure Solution Architect, and many, many more.

Within each Azure-specific Role IQ, there are a number of different learning paths related to the role. Within each path, there are a variety of different materials related to the specific role. For example, within the Azure Developers Role IQ, there are paths that cover everything from designing apps, developing them, deploying and troubleshooting. And within each path, there are a variety of different tools and courses to provide a rounded and comprehensive experience.

These Role IQs and Paths allow for optimal organization and structure of learning journeys. Given that they have been developed with Microsoft’s involvement, it’s safe to say that they represent a high industry standard for existing and aspiring technologists. What’s more, for those specifically interested in certification, there are dedicated channels that aggregate all of the materials related to specific exams.

How to find the list of courses available from the free subscription

If you’re new to Pluralsight or if you have a Pluralsight account and want quick access to the free Azure content, check out this Pluralsight page about free courses on Microsoft Azure.

Once you’re all set up, find the list of courses that are available through the free subscription by accessing the view to the main library after logging in (you can also click on the Home icon in the top-left corner or simply visit this link). Once you’re on this screen, there’ll be a section called ‘Course List’ near the bottom, which features a list of all the trainings available to the user.

ITMAGINATION, Microsoft Azure and Pluralsight

ITMAGINATION works with companies from a variety of different sectors (including banking, financial services, e-commerce, retail and more), and has experienced how companies of all shapes, sizes and standing have embraced cloud in recent years. ITMAGINATION is supporting them on their journey.
How to Get Started With Visual Studio Team Services

In this tutorial, you'll learn to get started with Visual Studio Team Services, the platform used by development teams at Microsoft.

Join the DZone community and get the full member experience.

In this post, we're going to explore how to get a full enterprise-grade development platform for free in 4 steps. Microsoft is offering for free the same environment that all of its engineers use every day to us.

In this specific post, we'll see how to get started from zero and at the end, we'll have our project hosted in the MS Cloud. The only requisite is to have a Microsoft Account. If you don't have an MS Account, you can subscribe for free.

1. Get Started With Visual Studio Team Services

Our first step is to go to https://www.visualstudio.com/ and click the button "Get started for free" under the Visual Studio Team Services column.

If we aren't logged in with our MS account, the site will ask to do so. After a successful login, we're asked to choose the third level domain name to access our VSTS environment in the cloud. We also choose if we want to manage the code with Git or Team Foundation Version Control. In this example we choose Git. Then we press Continue.

We wait a few seconds. The system now welcomes us with a brand new MyFirstProject.

2. Clone

If we have Visual Studio installed we can clone the repository directly with it by clicking the "Clone in Visual Studio" button. If we don't have Visual Studio installed we can download the Community version for free. Visual Studio will ask us to log in, and we have to log in with the same credentials used for the VSTS website.

After a successful login, Visual Studio will ask the download location and we click Clone.

We wait a few seconds and that's it. We can see that Visual Studio is working in the MyFirstProject repository (branch master) in the bottom-right corner of the window.

3. Initialize Our Repo

What we've done is good but a bit empty. Our repository has no code at all. For this example, we're going to create a brand new.NET Core Console app and push it back in the Microsoft cloud.

From the File menu, we choose New -> Project.

Then we choose a.NET Console App. We make sure that the location is the MyFirstProject location and if it's not we change the Location with the Browse button. Then we press OK.

Now we have a solution with a brand new fantastic app that needs to be saved in the cloud. To better initialize our git repo we add a .gitignore file to avoid unwanted assemblies and other files in our source control system. In the Team Explorer tool window we go to Settings -> Repository Settings and then we click on Add under the Ignore File section.

Now we're ready to commit and push our code into VSTS.

4. Push to VSTS

In the Team Explorer tool window, we press the Home button and the Changes.

As we can see, Visual Studio shows us the new files and we stage them all pressing the plus icon. Then we insert a commit message like "Init" and press Commit Staged.

We get a success message and we press the Sync button to upload our work to VSTS.

If we go back in the browser and refresh the page, we'll see something like this: If we go in the Code->Commits section, we can see our commit.

And that's it! It's so easy! In just a few minutes, we're working with the same platform that all development teams in Microsoft use. We set rock-solid foundations for our project. It is hosted in one of the best clouds in the world and we can use lots of tools and processes to organize our project. VSTS is full of features ranging from work organization to build, testing, and release management tools. In future posts, I'll explore other features of VSTS because I think it is the best environment in which to work professionally with software.

Deploy Angular App Using Azure DevOps Build and Release Pipelines

How to easily deploy the Angular app to Azure by configuring build and release pipelines in Azure DevOps

Introduction

I know that there are many articles on this topic, but with the latest pipeline configuration, most of the solutions didn’t work for me, so, I thought I would write this piece and share what I’ve found. Here, we are going to set up a Build and Release pipeline configuration of our Angular application by following a few basic steps. We will be using the Azure DevOps FTP pipeline service connection for the configuration. Enough with the introductions, let’s jump into the configuration.

Background

When I was trying to deploy my Angular application to Azure, I wanted to set up my build and release pipelines. I had followed some tutorials, but I was still running into some issues. Later, I decided to use the Azure FTP Upload Release Task, so we will be having only one task in our Release pipeline.

The Build Pipeline

Let’s begin by configuring the Azure DevOps build pipeline. But, first, we need to define our script in the package.json file:

If you have different routes and need to access them directly in the URL of the browser, you should consider adding a web.config file to your src folder:

Once that is done, add it as an asset in the angular.json file.

Go to your Azure DevOps site, click on Pipelines, and then Builds. Now, click on the + icon.

Pipeline

From the Pipeline section, you can mention your pipeline name and the agent pool. Remember to set the agent pool to Hosted VS2017 , or else you may end up with the error: Npm failed with return code: 1 2019–01–07T10:14:37.3309955Z ##[section]Finishing: npm build.

npm install

Click on the + icon in the Phase section and search for npm and click add. Now we can configure this task:

You can also click View YAML, which is on the ribbon, to see the yml version of the task.

npm build

In this step, we will add a new npm task and configure it for our build script.

Please note that the command is custom and we have included the prod-build-dev script in our package.json file.

Publish the Artifact

In this step, we will publish the artifacts we’ve generated. This is very important, otherwise, the release configuration will not be able to find the package.json file in the directory. Add a new task called Publish Build Artifacts and configure it the same as in the image below:

Enable Continuous Integration

Now that the tasks are ready, it is time to set up continuous integration. Click on the Triggers section and check Enable continuous integration.

Debugging the Build

If you ever need to debug the build pipeline, you can do so in the Variables section. Just setting the system.debug value to true will do the trick!

Run the Build

Once you’ve finished, click on the Save & Queue button to initiate the build. Our agent will run now and execute the tasks. As we have enabled the debug property, we can now see detailed logs in the console. The following tasks will happen:

The Release Pipeline

OK, we have successfully created our build pipeline, now it is time to create a release pipeline. As I mentioned earlier, we are going to have one task in our release pipeline: FTP Upload. Click on Pipelines and then Releases. Finally, click on the +New icon to create a new release pipeline.

Select the Artifacts

Select the artifacts generated in the build:

Select the Stage

Click on the stages and add one.

Adding an FTP Service Connection

Before we add a new FTP Upload task, we need to create a new FTP service connection in our Azure DevOps site. Click on the Project Settings on the bottom left corner, go to the Pipelines section, and then click on the Service connections. Now click on the + New service connection, in the pop up you need to provide the details which you can get from the Publish profile of your Azure Web App (click on Get Publish Profile in your Web App resource overview section in the Azure portal).

Add the FTP Upload Task

Now it is time to add the FTP Upload Task. Click on the + icon in Agent Job Task and add the task FTP Upload .

The remote directory is the folder where our application files are going to be, you should be able to see those files when you log in to the explorer using your FTP details from your app publish profile.

Create a Release

Now, it is time to create a release, click on the + Release button and then + Create a release. In the upcoming window, you should be able to see the pipeline and the artifacts selected. Just click on the Create button. The agent will be started in a few seconds, once it is ready, it will execute the tasks. Note that the FTP Upload task will remove the content from the directory first and then upload the new one:

Change the App Service Virtual Path

As we have supplied a custom folder location in the Release configuration, we should also change the Virtual Path of the Azure App service. To do so, go to your Azure App Service and then select Virtual Path under Application Settings. Set Virtual Path as site \wwwroot\wwwroot\yourappname (the folder name inside dist folder) and the type as Application .

Once you are done, you’ll see your Angular application running.

I know that there are many articles on this topic, but with the latest pipeline configuration, most of the solutions didn’t work for me, so, I thought I would write this piece and share what I’ve…

Terraform Modules and Code Structure

Applying Structure to your Resource Definitions

In this article I’ll be going over how best to structure your Terraform resource code into modules. This draws on the practices outlined in the site https://www.terraform-best-practices.com and the accompanying GitHub at https://github.com/antonbabenko/terraform-best-practices. It is intended to act as a summary of that content together with some of my own observations and suggestions thrown in for good measure. Although not technically Azure related, it is a subject central to your best Infrastructure as Code endeavours with Terraform.

Modules

Structuring your resource code into modules makes them reusable and easily maintainable. I guess you could say it makes them, well, modular. You can find out all about modules from the Terraform docs at https://www.terraform.io/docs/modules/composition.html so I won’t go into them too much here.

Registries

Modules become particularly powerful when you start to publish them centrally. Terraform supports a number of repositories for these, such as file shares, GitHub, BitBucket and Terraform Registry. Users can then reference the repository modules for use within their own deployments.

Module Definitions

How you determine what constitutes a module is really down to you. It will depend on how your deployments are structured and how you reuse resource definitions. Terraform recommend dividing into natural groupings such as networking, databases, virtual machines, etc. However you decide to chunk up your infrastructure deployment definitions, there are some guidelines on what to include.

Each module is contained in its own folder and should contain a file for each of the following:

The resource configuration definitions. This is typically named main.tf

The outputs to be consumed outside of the module. Again, no surprises at being called outputs.tf

The variables that are used within the module. Hardly surprisingly this is typically called variables.tf

Some teams go a little further and split up certain resource types within the module, such as security or network resources, into their own separate .tf files to be used as well as main.tf. This may make sense where the module contains a large number of resources, and managing them in a single main.tf file becomes unwieldy.

Module ‘Contracts’

In Object Oriented terms, you can loosely equate the variables to class method parameters required for the module. Similarly the Outputs are like the returns from methods and the main as the class itself. I’m sure there are plenty of purists that would point out floors in this comparison. However, conceptually it is good enough when thinking about how to encapsulate things (if you squint a bit). The variables and the outputs should form a sort of contract for use of the module. As such these definitions should try and remain relatively constant like the best library interfaces try to.

You can of course nest module folders within other module folders. However, generally speaking, it is not recommended to have very deep nested module hierarchies as this can make development difficult. Typically one level of modules, usually in a folder called ‘modules’ (again no prizes for originality here) is the accepted standard. You may of course opt for calling your folder ‘Bernard’, or ‘marzipan’ or whatever you like. Let’s face it though ‘modules’ is probably a lot more self-explanatory.

A basic module might look like the following:

Referencing Modules

With your modules nicely encapsulated for potential reuse and standards and all that loveliness, you need to make use of them. In your root module, being the top level entry point of your Terraform configuration code, you add references such as shown below:

This then defines a resource using the module. Simply add your variable assignments that will be used within the module as required and you’re good to go.

Some teams like prefixes (mod-, m- etc.) on these files in order to distinguish them from resources that are standalone, single-file definitions (in turn perhaps prefixed res-, r-). I’m not a big fan of prefixing by subtypes (remember Hungarian Notation. ) as this tends to get in the way of writing code. For me, simple naming that aligns with other resource file naming makes more sense.

Variables Overload?

One area to be mindful of is to not introduce variables for every attribute of your module’s resources. If an attribute is not going to be subject to change then it won’t need a variable. Remembering the maintenance of your code is a key consideration of any good ‘Coding Citizen’. Too many variables will quickly overwhelm those not familiar.

There is of course a balance to be struck here. Too few variables and you can’t really reuse your module as it is too specific for others’ needs. It may make sense to have variations on modules that have various attributes preset for a specific workload. For example a certain Virtual Machine role type will ordinarily have a bunch of attributes that don’t differ. The standard advice of using your best judgement and a little forethought applies as with most things. Personally I’d rather work with two modules that are specific than one that is vague and requires supplying many more variables.

Summing Up

So that just about covers the main points I have to share on Terraform modules and resource code structure. I hope this has provided some insight and guidance of value based on my adventures in Terraform module land. They’re definitely worth getting familiar with early on to simplify and structure your efforts. As your organisation’s deployments grow, maturity in this area will soon pay off for all involved.

The last post in this series (I know, gutting right?) coming up soon will cover Tips and Tricks with Terraform and Azure DevOps that I’ve picked up on my travels. Thanks for reading and stay safe.
